Mt. Chocorua – Entry by Christine

Saco, Phil’s 60th Birthday, & Hikes

After two particularly draining weeks at work and very little time spent with Doug, I was ready for some rest and relaxation yesterday. So, clearly, that means that we woke up early, packed up our hiking stuff and hit I-93 north before 8am en route to the White Mountains. We arrived at the Champney Brook trailhead to Mt. Chocorua around 10:15 and started at 10:30. Some may think that we’re crazy, and to be quite honest, I was thinking the same thing for the first half of the hike. I was mentally exhausted and kept tripping over roots, rocks and my own feet. But it was a gorgeous day. Days like this don’t come along very often at the end of June. It was sunny, clear and cool – perfect conditions for our first 7+ mile hike.

Even though I was dragging on the way up, we made good time. Arrived at the windy summit at lunch time and soaked in the views while enjoying PB&J sandwiches and trailmix.

After an hour or so and much picture taking, we started the descent. It’s amazing what 360° views can do for the spirit! We both had more energy on the descent and even opted for an extra .5 mile detour to check out Champney Falls (where Doug practiced his flying…pictured below). All in all, we arrived back at our car around 4:30 and congratulated ourselves on our first hike over 6.5 miles.

This morning I felt inspired to make several photo albums to post to our website. There are pictures from my favorite father-in-law’s 60th birthday, a day trip to ME to visit my cousins and, of course, hiking photos. So, check them out at http://www.thickasabrick.net/photos/.
