Birthday Hike up Cannon

What an incredible day with my daughter. We took advantage of the updated weather forecast of cool temps and no thunderstorms and drove north to conquer her second 4000 footer, Mt Cannon, after taking her up Eisenhower a couple weeks ago. I don’t think it’s possible to have more fun that we had. She DJ’ed…

Acadia National Park – Days 1 and 2

On the way up to Acadia we went back to my favorite Pizza place, George’s Pizza, in Auburn, ME. They truly have the best pepperoni pizza in New England. They didn’t disappoint. It’s where I went for pizza when I had enough money to afford something better than Domino’s delivery. After pizza we stopped at…

Lonesome Lake Winter Hike

Our last Christmas present from Diane (Christine’s mom) was the gift of a day of hiking up north all by ourselves. Despite a late start and a return home to retrieve forgotten ski poles, We started up the mountain just before noon. I suppose that referring to Lonesome Lake as a mountain is a little bit generous (and a little bit of an insult to real mountains). But it is about 1000 feet of elevation in a little bit over mile, so it’s not exactly a stroll either.

We really could not have asked for a better day to go for a hike. The night before the mountain…

Started off with a trip to the Long Island Aquarium, which although small, had a sea lion show and a tank where you could touch and feed the sting rays (stingers removed of course). Helena also got to…

Goodbye Grand Canyon, Hello Petrified Forest

I somehow managed to convince Kasper to go on one more hike on Thursday morning. It seems like a long shot based on the day before, but we were both feeling pretty good when we woke up so we decided to hike the Bright Angel Trail. You can hike as far as 12 miles round-trip,…

South Kaibab Trail – Grand Canyon

Yesterday we hiked the South Kaibab Trail on the south rim down to Cedar Point, about 3 miles round trip and about 1000 feet of elevation. When you start the trail you start dropping in elevation immediately, switchback after switchback after switchback after (well I think you get the idea). The picture below is from…

Hello Grand Canyon -South Rim

Yesterday was a long day all around between the flight to Vegas and the drive to the South Rim. It was successful in just about every sense except that I realized on the flight to Vegas that I had forgotten my National Park Pass that we bought in Death Valley. Much drama ensued trying to…

Death Valley – Day 2 (Mt. Perry)

We started our death Valley hiking adventure yesterday with a hike up to Mount Perry. Before starting the hike we took some sunrise photos from Zabriskie point. The hike itself was absolutely amazing. It was a ridgeline hike of about 4 miles (1 way) with death Valley on one side and another set of mountains…

Red Rock Canyon Rocks!

Christine added her 40th state, Nevada, today with our trip to Red Rock Canyon. It was a beautiful 13 mile scenic drive. I think we averaged about 40 pictures per mile (maybe more). We brought Helena’s friend Welly with us and he enjoined the drive too.
