Fall Foliage
I realize I haven’t been posting very much since we returned from our trip. But that doesn’t mean that we haven’t been doing anything. In fact, I feel like we might be even more busy, which I didn’t think was possible. It doesn’t help that the room where the computer sits is lacking insulation and needs new windows (which are on order) and is therefore quite chilly. But I am braving the cold to post some pictures and this entry.
Christine and I took our annual fall foliage trip couple of weeks ago. We did a couple of short hikes to the cliffs at Welch-Dickey and to the Sqam Lake Overlook on West Rattlesnake Trail. This has probably been the best year for fall colors in probably the last four or five years. The weather was absolutely beautiful and we took full advantage.
But since we head up north every year we tried to add a little bit of adventure this year and go a few places that we have never been before. The biggest adventure was our trip down Sandwich Notch Road. The road itself is only open during the summer and is only moderately maintained (apparently to keep out the faint of heart as well as those who value the condition of their car). Since neither of those terms describe me, we took a chance and enjoyed one of the most beautiful drives we have had in a long time. The road has apparently been in existence since 1801 and our best guess is that they have NOT made any improvements since then. Personally, I hope they don’t so we can go back and enjoy some of the hikes that leave from the trailheads we discovered.
The picture below is from the lookout at the Welch-Dickey Cliffs and the one below is the Squam Lake overlook at the top of West Rattlesnake Trail.
