May 2011
This has once again been another crazy whirlwind of a month. Not sure how it got to be June already, but here we are. We got back from Texas the first week of May and after not seeing Helena for an entire week she looked and sounded like a totally different person. Her voice had changed, her hair filled in, I swear she was taller, and she was saying all sorts of new words and phrases that we had never heard before. I can still remember the look of both disbelief and joy on her face when she saw me enter her room the morning after our return. She was super excited to see mommy and daddy! But even our return was not enough to prevent her hunger from taking over and cause her to inform us that it was time to eat. At least we did get some good hugs and kisses!
We took Helena on her first hike this month (one in which she actually did the hiking). We did a 1 mile loop around the pond at Livingston Park in Manchester and she walked the entire way. Although she did pause often to hug a tree or eat a rock. I started calling her “my little tree hugger”. We did the same hike the following weekend as well, but it was for a fundraiser for her day care and we popped her in the stroller for the second half of the loop because we were the slowest walkers in the bunch. But she celebrated her achievement with a medal around her neck while she munched on a cupcake while leaning on her dad for support after her exertion.
One of the funnier developments of this past month is that Helena now understands the distinction between the weekend and weekdays. And although she looks like her mother, she is a lot like her father…The reason I say that, is that she distinguishes between weekdays and weekends based on what’s for breakfast. She knows that the weekend means pancakes or eggs for breakfast. She can’t fall asleep fast enough on Friday night knowing that when she wakes up she’s going to have a treat for breakfast. I like telling her that she needs to sleep in though in order for daddy to have the energy to make breakfast. So far it seems to be working most of the time.
Helena also had her first potty experience this month. She loves to sit on her potty and read a book before bathtime now. The second night that we let her try the potty she sat there listening to me read the book and then all of a sudden she got up and announced that she was “all done”, closed the lid of the potty and walked to her bath. When we peeked in at the potty we saw that she had taken care of some business. The resulting cheering and praise apparently did not impress her because she got very uncomfortable all of the sudden and didn’t want to finish her bath.
As I think back on the last few months, there have been so many fun moments that I couldn’t possibly write about all of them even if I wanted to. We are so lucky to have our little girl! Enjoy the pictures!
