All Aboard the Potty Train

Before I talk about potty training, I just had to share a couple pictures of Helena from Christmas. This year she really really enjoyed Christmas! When she came downstairs though on Christmas morning it took her a little while to warm up to the idea of opening Christmas presents because she was just so incredibly excited to see her “Elf on the Shelf”, Ellie Thistle, and actually get to “hug him” after being denied the whole month of December. But after about 15 min. of being out of her mind excited she realized that he was actually sitting in her new dollhouse (which she asked Santa for). By the time we got to Nonna & Papa’s house later in the day she was opening presents so fast she didn’t even take time to see what they were and instead started begging for more “big presents”. I think she truly discovered the meaning of Christmas. 😉

Cutest girl ever all dressed up for church

That’s right. We are potty trained! One Monday morning a few weeks ago (12/12/11) we brought her to school in a diaper and she has been coming home in big girl underwear ever since. She has done an absolutely amazing job. Even in the 1st week she only had 4 or 5 small accidents and at least a couple of those were because there was a line to the potty at school. My favorite part of the story is how she learned to poop. She got the hang of peeing almost instantly, but she was not a big fan of doing any other business on the potty. The following Monday (one week after starting potty training) I was home alone with her getting ready for school and work and she kept asking me to go potty, but she would only sit for 2 seconds before saying she was all done. By the 3rd time we did that in the span of 5 min. I knew I needed to come up with a plan so I made a deal with her. I told her she could listen to any song she wanted on daddy’s iPhone as long as she just sat on the potty. Of all the songs she could’ve picked, she picked “I’m gonna be (500 miles)” by the Proclaimers. And wouldn’t you know it, by the end of the song it just happened and she realized that it wasn’t so bad. We listened to some music for the next few days and she was all set with no looking back. As of a couple weeks ago we don’t even wear a diaper during nap time. Only overnight!

For the record, those are Hello Kitty big girl underwear
