Lonesome Lake Winter Hike

Our last Christmas present from Diane (Christine’s mom) was the gift of a day of hiking up north all by ourselves. Despite a late start and a return home to retrieve forgotten ski poles, We started up the mountain just before noon. I suppose that referring to Lonesome Lake as a mountain is a little bit generous (and a little bit of an insult to real mountains). But it is about 1000 feet of elevation in a little bit over mile, so it’s not exactly a stroll either.

We really could not have asked for a better day to go for a hike. The night before, the mountain had received about 4 inches of snow, and all the trees were blanketed in a fresh layer of it, making the hike that much more beautiful. It also covered up the ice on the trail making the footing on the trail much better.

At the top of the trail we were rewarded with a gorgeous view of the snow-covered lake and mountains behind. And on the way back down the clouds parted and we got to see Lincoln and Lafayette mountains and the ridge trail linking them lit up by a magnificent orange sunset on the mountain peaks.
