On the mend

Even though I didn’t get very many get well soon messages or comments, I’m assuming that people would like to know that I’m doing much better. No more chipmunk cheeks… but my face his bruised enough that it looks like Christine beats me…at least a little bit. I can’t even begin to describe how sick and tired I am of apple sauce! I’ve gone through about 4 of those huge jars you can get at the grocery store! The Percoset was pretty handy, though I’m happy to be off that too. Also, apparently me on Valium (for the surgery) was very funny. I still say it didn’t affect me that much, but Christine tells a different story…she’s a very credible witness too, which does not help my version.

So enough of that! I want to share something about Hawaii that I thought was very interesting. I had never given this any thought before our honeymoon, and I have wanted to blog about it for a while.

Did you know that the orientation of the moon is different depending on where you are (latitudinally) in the world? At our latitude here in New Hampshire, the moon is a crescent shape like the picture below.

In Hawaii, the orientation of the moon is more like a smile. Christine can attest to the fact that I wouldn’t shut up about it! I guess you could say that I was all around fascinated with the sky in Hawaii. I guess it was so interesting because no matter where you went (either in the city or out in the country) you always had an excellent view of the night sky and could always see almost all the stars! So either the stars are especially bright down there, or they use some kind of special lights that don’t blot out the stars as happens here.

In fact, one of my favorite pictures from the trip was this one below. If you look closely, you can see an airplane flying through the sky as well as the smiling moon! Christine wouldn’t let me put it in our picture book that we made with iPhoto, but I had do share it somewhere. I wonder if everyone who looks at the picture will roll their eyes just like she does… Click here for a larger version of this picture.
